When it comes to removing varnish from clothes like t-shirts, the first thing to do is identify the type of varnish. Water based varnishes can be removed with warm soapy water. If the label says “enamel”, varnish is probably oil based and needs to be treated differently.

If you’re dealing with a water-based varnish, the best way to remove it is to soak the stained area in a bowl of warm soapy water for about 10 minutes. This should help to loosen stain. After soaking, use an old toothbrush to scrub the stained fabric gently, making sure not to damage the delicate fibres of the t-shirt.

Once you’ve removed as much of the varnish as possible, rinse the stain with cold water and dab dry with a clean cloth. Then, you can wash t-shirt in the washing machine. Make sure to use a detergent designed for delicate fabrics, as this will help to prevent damage to the fibres.

If the varnish is oil-based, you should use a specialist stain remover or laundry detergent. Apply the product directly to stain and allow it to soak for 10-15 minutes before washing. It’s always best to test a small area of the fabric before using any products, to ensure that it won’t damage the material.

Varnish stains can be tricky to remove, but with some patience and the right techniques, you can get rid of them. By following these simple steps, you can keep your t-shirts looking bright and clean.
