Materials Needed

  • White rag or towel
  • Laundry detergent
  • Warm water
  • Baking soda
  • Hairdryer

Step 1: Treat Stain Immediately

Time is of the essence when it comes to treating a varnish stain on a sweater. As soon as you notice the stain, grab a white towel or rag and blot the area to absorb as much of the stain as possible. Do not rub the stain—this can cause it to spread.

Step 2: Use Detergent

Next, mix one tablespoon of laundry detergent with one cup of warm water and gently pour it onto the stain. Blot the area again using a clean towel or rag to lift out the stain. Once the stain begins to lighten, rinse the area with cool water and blot it again with a towel.

Step 3: Apply Baking Soda

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the stain. The baking soda will help to absorb the remaining varnish. Let it sit for at least five minutes before blotting it away with a dry towel.

Step 4: Finish With a Hairdryer

Finally, using a hairdryer set to medium heat, blow hot air onto stain for about a minute or until area is completely dry. Be sure to keep the hairdryer moving back and forth so you don’t damage the fabric.

Additional Tips

  • Don’t use bleach or other harsh chemicals, as these can damage the material.
  • Be sure to check the care label on your sweater before you attempt to clean stain.
  • If the stain persists after trying the above steps, take the garment to a professional dry cleaner.
