Varnish is usually found on walls or woodwork, but it can also land on fabrics such as silk shantung. If this happens, it’s important to act quickly to avoid long-term staining. The first step is to get a clean cloth and blot any excess varnish from the fabric. Make sure not to rub the stain, as this may set it into the fabric more.
Once the excess is blotted away, fill a bowl with cold water and add a few drops of a gentle detergent. Swirl the solution together, then dip a clean cloth in the mixture and dab it onto the stained area. Make sure not to scrub the fabric, as this may cause further damage. Once you’ve dabbed the area, rinse cloth out and repeat the process until the stain begins to disappear.
If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may want to try using a solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Make sure to test the solvent on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first, in order to make sure it won’t cause any further damage. Once you’ve tested solvent, dab a clean cloth into it and apply it to the stain. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
Finally, it is important to rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove any traces of the cleaning solution or solvent. Once the fabric is dry, it should be looking as good as new.
