Step 1: Gather Materials

Start by gathering together the necessary tools and supplies for removing varnish:

  • Cotton balls or cotton swabs
  • Isopropyl alcohol or mineral spirits
  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • White vinegar
  • Soft cloth

Step 2: Test Structural Integrity of the Item

Before beginning the removal process, it is important to assess whether the varnish stained item is still structurally sound. If it is not, it will be too delicate for varnish removal. To test the integrity, check that all seams and hems are in good condition and that no threads have come undone.

Step 3: Apply Solvent

When the item has passed structural integrity test, apply a small amount of either isopropyl alcohol or mineral spirits to a cotton swab or cotton ball. Gently rub it over the varnished area until the varnish starts to break down. If an area of the fabric is particularly delicate, use a dry cleaning solvent instead.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Once the varnish has been removed, rinse the item with a mixture of white vinegar and cold water. Use a soft cloth to dab at the removed area until the fabric is dry. Once dry, inspect item for any remaining varnish and repeat the removal process if needed.
