Varnish stains on robes—or any other fabric—can happen to anyone. Whether it from a spilled glass of wine or painting your house, varnish stains can quickly ruin a lovely robe. But don't panic. With the right cleaning technique, removing the stain is possible.
As with any stain, the quicker you act, the better. If you're able to attend to stain soon after it happens, you'll have best chance of restoring your robe.
The first step in removing a varnish stain is to pre-treat fabric with a commercial pre-wash laundry stain remover. Follow instructions on the product packaging for application and wait for at least 10 minutes before beginning the next step.
Once you have allowed time for pre-treatment, fill a sink or bowl with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild laundry detergent. Submerge robe in the water and gently rub the affected area for a few minutes. Then, rinse and repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.
If the stain persists, you may need to resort to a stronger method. Try soaking the robe in a mixture of 1 part oxygen-based bleach and 8 parts hot water (check the garment's care tag for instructions). Allow the robe to soak for at least 30 minutes and then rinse with cold water. Do not dry the robe until you are certain that the stain has been removed.
Keep in mind that chlorine bleach should never be used on silk, wool, or nylon robes.
