Varnish is a solvent-based finish used to protect and beautify surfaces. When having a good time with friends or family you may occasionally end up with a spill on your favorite outfit made of poplin fabric. Don’t worry though, as there are a few ways to effectively clean varnish stains from this type of fabric using items you probably already have lying around in the house.
Things You'll Need
- Sponge
- Mild detergent
- White vinegar
- Ammonia
- Soft brush
- Borax
- Lemon juice
- Towel
Instructions
- Pour a small amount of mild detergent solution onto a wet sponge. Gently rub the area affected by varnish stain. Rinse the area with warm water.
- Create a solution by mixing one tablspoon of white vinegar with two tablespoons of ammonia and ½ cup water. Use a soft brush to gently scrub the stained area with this solution.
- Create a paste by combining equal amounts of borax and lemon juice. Rub this paste onto stain. Leave it to sit for about 10 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water.
- Dry the area with a soft towel.
Tips:
- Always spot test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area first to ensure that it does not cause any damage to fabric.
- Test the fabric's colorfastness before using any cleaning solutions.
- Seek professional advice if the stain does not disappear after trying the above methods.
