Peau de soie is a elegant and luxurious fabric that is often found in evening gowns, dresses and other formalwear. Unfortunately, this type of fabric is also prone to varnish stains from items such as perfume bottles or nail polish. Although removing these stains may be difficult, with the right method and a few cleaning products, you can get rid of varnish stains on peau de soie for good.

What You'll Need

  • Cotton swab
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • Paper towels

Instructions

  1. Start by blotting away any excess varnish with a paper towel. Be gentle and use a blotting motion so as not to spread the stain.
  2. Next, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and lightly dab the varnish stain. Do not rub or scrub the fabric.
  3. Rinse the area with cold water and blot to remove the rubbing alcohol.
  4. If the stain is still visible, apply a dry cleaning solvent to the area. Again, use a dabbing motion.
  5. Finally, rinse the fabric again with cold water and blot with a paper towel. Hang the garment to air dry.

It is important to test the rubbing alcohol and dry cleaning solvent on an inconspicuous part of the fabric before beginning the cleaning process. This will help ensure that no further damage is done to fabric.
