Step 1: Blot the Stain

When you first notice the varnish stain, you should act fast. Get a clean white cloth and blot the area to try and soak up as much of the varnish as possible. Make sure you use a light touch when doing this - rubbing or scrubbing hard will make the stain even more stubborn.

Step 2: Use a Commercial Cleaner

Once you have blotted the stain, you will want to apply a commercial cleaner specifically designed for removing varnish stains. Follow the instructions provided on the packaging. If you are unsure of which cleaner to use, you can always ask an expert in a fabric store for advice.

Step 3: Rinse & Dry

Once you have applied the cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing off the jacket with cold water. Lay the garment flat to dry on a towel, rather than hanging it up. This will ensure that any excess cleaner is properly rinsed away.

Step 4: Spot Clean

If the stain still refuses to budge, you may want to consider a spot cleaning with a suitable detergent. Apply a few drops of detergent to the area, then rub gently. Be sure to work the solution into fabric in a circular motion. When finished, rinse garment thoroughly.

Step 5: Take It To a Professional

If all else fails, take garment to a professional dry cleaner. They will be able to assess the situation and apply a specific cleaning method that won't damage the fabric.
