Varnish stains can be deeply unattractive. When an accidental spill of varnish occurs, it can be difficult to tell exactly how to tackle the stain. There’s no need to worry, however, since there are several ways to deal with varnish stains on handbags and purses.

1. Blot the Stain and Avoid Rubbing It

The first step is to quickly blot the stain without rubbing or scrubbing. This will help prevent the varnish from spreading further. Grab a clean cloth or paper towel and gently press down on the stain. Don’t rub stain.

2. Use a Water and Alcohol Mixture

You can make a mild cleaner by combining a tablespoon of isopropyl alcohol with 1/4 cup of warm water. Dip your cloth or paper towel in the mixture and lightly press against the stain. Again, don’t rub.

Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then rinse it away with some warm water. Be sure to use cold water after drying in order to prevent any residue from being left behind. This method should work on recent and set-in varnish stains.

3. Use Solvents such as Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner

For tougher stains, try using solvents such as mineral spirits or paint thinner. These are strong chemicals, so you should be sure to wear protective gloves and use them in a well-ventilated space. Dip a cloth into the solvent and blot the stain. You may need to apply more than once if the stain is more substantial.

Be sure to read the usage instructions carefully and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. After blotting the stain, rinse the area thoroughly with water and allow the handbag or purse to dry completely before using again.

4. Try a Commercial Spot Cleaner

If none of the methods above have helped, try using a commercial spot cleaner with enzymes specifically designed for removing stains. These can be purchased from most grocery stores or online. Follow the directions carefully, making sure to test out the cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.
