What You Need for Cleaning Varnish Stains

  • Vinegar
  • Dry-cleaning solvent
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Q-tips

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step One: Test Solvent on an Inconsequential Area of the Fabric

Before you begin cleaning any varnish from your formalwear, test it first. Take a small amount of dry-cleaning solvent and dab it onto an area of your clothing that is not visible. Observe the result and if the fabric is unharmed, proceed to the next step.

Step Two: Blot the Stain with Microfiber Cloth

Using the microfiber cloth, begin blotting the stained area repeatedly. Focus on the edges of the stain and work your way inwards. If possible, take item of clothing to the sink and rinse with cold water during this stage. Then use the cloth to absorb moisture.

Step Three: Dab Vinegar and Solvent onto Stain

Mix an equal part of vinegar and solvent in a bowl and, using the q-tips, apply it to the stain. Do not scrub the fabric as this could cause the stain to spread. Keep dabbing until the entire stain has been saturated. Afterward, allow it to dry.

Step Four: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 if Necessary

If stain does not appear to be coming out, repeat steps two and three. Be sure to apply vinegar and solvent mix gently. Also, switch out the q-tip for a new one if needed.
