Step 1: Carefully scrape away the extra varnish
To begin, take a non-metallic object or a soft cloth and carefully scrape away extra varnish residue that may be on the surface of the item. Make sure not to press too hard since this could cause damage to material. Make sure to work in one direction as you scrape so that the stain does not spread.
Step 2: Blot the stained area with a damp rag
Next, use a damp rag to blot the stained area. Be sure to use a damp rag as opposed to a wet one because a wet cloth may spread the stain even more. Gently rub the affected area with a small dab of liquid detergent and repeat the blotting process until there is no remaining residue of varnish.
Step 3: Wash item with cool water and cold detergent
Once you are satisfied that all the excess varnish particles have been removed, apply a gentle detergent to the affected area and rub it into the fabric using your fingers. Next, rinse out the detergent and any remaining residue with cold water. Make sure not to use hot water as it can cause the stain to set in even deeper.
Step 4: Hang the garment to dry
Finally, hang the garment outside to dry. Do not put it in a clothes dryer, as the heat can cause the stain to become permanent. After the item has finished drying, check if there are any remaining marks and repeat steps 1-3 as necessary.
