What You'll Need

  • Clean rag
  • Vinegar
  • Small bowl
  • Baking soda (optional)

Step 1: Blot the Spot

First you should grab a clean rag and place it over the stain. Press firmly, using circular motions, to blot the spot and absorb as much of the varnish as you can. Don’t rub, scrub, or wipe as this could spread the stain to a larger area.

Step 2: Prepare the Mixture

Create a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water in a small bowl. Make sure mixture is not too concentrated, as the acidity of the vinegar may damage the fabric.

Step 3: Soak Stain

Gently soak the stained area with the vinegar and water solution.

Step 4: Let the Spot Sit

Let the solution sit for 15 minutes to give it time to break down the varnish. If you have stubborn stains, add some baking soda to the bowl and mix together. The baking soda will help lift the stain.

Step 5: Blot Again

Using a clean cloth, blot the spot again to absorb the excess mixture and any remaining varnish. Don’t rinse or wash off mixture, as this could set the stain.

Step 6: Air Dry

Allow your evening gown to air dry before wear. Your stain should be gone by the time its completely dry.
