If you’ve spilled varnish on your down jacket, the first step is to act fast. Varnish can seep into the fibers of fabrics and be harder to remove if allowed to dry. So, put on some gloves and dab the stain with a damp cloth (preferably one that has been soaked in water and also rubbed with a bit of gentle detergent) as soon as possible.
Once you’ve blotted up most of the varnish, proceed to make a paste by mixing together a small amount of gentle laundry detergent and water. Using a clean cloth, apply the paste to the stained area and allow it to sit for up to 30 minutes. You can rub the paste lightly to help loosen any stubborn bits of varnish.
When the paste has had time to act, rinse the area with cool water. For an even better result, you can use a soft brush or sponge to gently agitate the fibers of the fabric while rinsing. Once you are done rinsing, air-dry the area and check to see if the stain has been completely removed. If not, you may need to repeat the cleaning process.
Once you have completely removed the stain, you can further protect the fabric and ensure that your down jacket remains in great condition. To do this, apply a fabric protector spray to the affected area.
With the right technique, removing varnish stains from a down jacket is not too difficult. Always remember to act quickly and use the proper products and supplies to get the job done efficiently and effectively.
