Removing varnish stains from cotton poplin can be a tricky task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are the steps you can follow to safely and effectively remove varnish stains from cotton poplin without damaging the fabric:

  • Pre-treat the stain with a spot cleaner or a mixture of dish detergent and warm water. Gently rub the solution into the stained area using a soft brush or cloth.
  • Rinse the fabric with cold water to remove any residual cleaner. Do not use hot water as it may cause the varnish to set further into the fabric.
  • Apply a commercial enzyme cleaner, such as Zout or Borax, onto the stained area and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  • Using a soft brush or cloth, lightly rub the solution into the stained area and rinse with cold water.
  • If the stain persists, repeat steps 1–4. You may also try adding 1/4 cup vinegar to the enzyme cleaner.
  • Once the stain has been removed, launder the fabric according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

These steps should help you to remove varnish stains from cotton poplin. Remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when laundering the fabric and to pre-test any cleaning products on an inconspicuous area before applying them to the stained area.
