What to Do First

If you’ve just spilled varnish on your coat, it is important to act fast. First, try to scrape off the excess varnish if possible with a butter knife or other flat tool. Once excess varnish has been removed, you can then move on to the stain removal steps.

Removing Stain

To remove the varnish stain from the coat, mix up a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Then dip a clean sponge in the mixture and dab the stained area gently, taking care not to scrub the fabric. Continue dabbing coat until stain is gone.

Once you have finished dabbing and the stain has been removed, rinse the stained area with warm water. After that, you can wash coat as usual and then hang it out to dry.

Handling Uncooperative Stains

For stubborn varnish stains, try adding a few drops of dish soap to the vinegar mixture before dabbing the stain with a sponge. This should loosen the stain and help it come away from fabric more easily.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol to tackle particularly stubborn stains. Dab affected area lightly with a cloth soaked in alcohol. Be sure to test this method on an inconspicuous area of the coat first so as not to cause any damage.

Prevent Future Accidents

Finally, to prevent future accidents, take safety measures. Make sure to keep any containers of varnish or other liquids away from the clothes you are wearing, and in general be very careful when handling them.
