Pre-Treating Your Varnish Stains

The first step in dealing with your varnish stain is to pre-treat area. Begin by moistening the stained area with a few drops of water and then applying a laundry detergent, such as Persil® ProClean®, directly onto the stain. Rub the detergent into the fabric with your finger or a soft-bristled brush. Allow the detergent to sit on the fabric for five minutes before moving on to the next step.

Using Solvent-Based Stain Removers

After pre-treating varnish stain, you can move on to using a solvent-based stain remover. Begin by mixing one part of the stain remover with four parts of water in a small bowl. Soak a clean cloth in solution and then use it to blot the stain until it has been completely removed. Finally, rinse the area with cold water to remove any leftover residue, and then allow the fabric to air-dry.

Using Detergent-Based Stain Removers

You can also try using a detergent-based stain remover to get rid of a varnish stain. Begin by mixing four tablespoons of the stain remover and one quart of warm water together in a bucket. Submerge the stained area of the garment in the solution and then allow it to soak for 30 minutes. After soaking, take the garment out of the solution and rub the stain in a circular motion with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse the area with cool water and then hang the garment up to dry.
