Steps to Follow
- Before washing, examine the garment for any areas of color bleeding. If there is, dab it with a color-safe bleach, such as OxiClean or Clorox2, to help prevent further damage.
- Mix one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with two cups of cold water in a bowl and stir together until the mixture is frothy.
- Dip an old toothbrush in the mixture and gently scrub the stained area of the garment.
- Rinse out toothbrush and dip it into the soapy water again. Gently scrub stained area of the garment for another minute.
- Wash the garment in the hottest water possible on your machine's setting for the fabric. Rinse in cold water and dry according to the care label instructions.
Additional Tips
- If stain remains after you have completed these steps, place the garment in a basin or sink filled with hot water for up to 30 minutes.
- After soaking, add a powdered oxygen-based bleach or a cup of baking soda to hot water and stir.
- Let garment soak for another 30 minutes before washing in warm water with clothing detergent.
- If the stain is still present after following these steps, repeat the process or bring the garment to a professional dry cleaner.
