Varnish stains may make your canvas appear dull and discolored. They can also be very tricky to get rid of. To achieve the best results, you’ll need to take a few steps and follow certain directions.

What You’ll Need

  • Turpentine
  • White cotton cloth
  • Fresh water

Steps to Cleaning Varnish Stains

  1. Begin by gently dabbing the stained area with a damp white cotton cloth.
  2. Continue dabbing until you’ve removed the majority of the stain, making sure to keep the cloth damp.
  3. Once the stain has been successfully removed, rinse the area with cool water.
  4. If the stain still remains, dip a clean cloth into turpentine and carefully blot the stain. Be sure to not scrub the area as this can cause damage to the canvas.
  5. Rinse the area once more with cool water and allow it to air dry.
