The first thing to know when it comes to tackling urine stains is that prevention is key. If you find yourself in need of cleaning up the mess, however, there are some steps you can take.

Step 1: Blotting Up the Mess

If the stain is fresh, start by gently blotting up as much of the urine as possible with a paper towel or cloth rag. If the fabric is delicate or has a nap, lay a paper towel over spot and press down firmly without rubbing. This will help to absorb urine without causing damage to the fabric's fibers.

Step 2: Pretreating

Once you have absorbed as much urine as you can, you'll need to pretreat the area. A laundry detergent containing enzymes such as Procter & Gamble’s Tide Ultra Stain Release is an effective option. Apply a small amount of the detergent directly to the stain and lightly rub it in with a cloth or brush. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse with cool water.

Step 3: Washing and Drying

After you have pretreated the stain, launder the pants, using cold water and air-drying them. Do not put them in the dryer, as this will only set the stain. Once pants are dry, inspect the area to make sure stain has been removed. If any trace remains, repeat the process until the stain has been eliminated.
