First, you must identify the fabric your hanbok is made from. Generally, a hanbok is composed of either silk, hemp, or ramie and requires different cleaning solutions and procedures. Once identified, you can move on to the cleaning process depending on the fabric type.
Silk is a delicate material that requires a gentle hand. To start, blot stained area using a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub fabric, as this may spread the stain further and cause more damage. After blotting the stain, mix a solution of warm water with a mild detergent and apply to the stained area using a soft bristle brush in a circular motion.
Once the solution has been applied, rinse the area with cool water and allow it to air dry.
Hemp and Ramie are easier to clean than silk and require less attention. Begin by blotting the stain with a dry cloth to absorb as much of the urine as possible. Create a solution of warm water and a small amount of laundry detergent and apply it to the stained area with a soft brush. Rinse the area thoroughly with cool water then wash in a washing machine on the gentle cycle. Hang dry to preserve the fabric.
It may take several attempts at cleaning to completely remove the urine stain. If the stain is still present after several attempts, it may be necessary to seek professional dry cleaning services.
