If you’ve ever had misfortune of dealing with urine stains on a coat, you know it can be quite a challenge. Not only is it unsightly, but depending on the fabric and color of the coat, it can be hard to remove the stain without damaging the garment. Fortunately, there are a few methods you can try if you find yourself with a pee-soaked coat that needs cleaning.

Method 1: Using Detergent and Cold Water

This method is best for fresh stains and light-colored fabrics. Begin by blotting away any excess urine with a clean cloth or paper towel. Try to avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain, as this could cause it to spread or become embedded deeper into the fabric. Next, mix some cold water with an enzyme-based detergent in a bowl and stir until it has dissolved. Then, use a clean cloth soaked in the mixture to gently blot the stain and let it rest for at least 10 minutes.

After the 10 minutes, rinse off the area with cold water and blot the area dry with a clean cloth. Repeat this a few times until the urine stain is gone. If the stain persists, try a stronger solution of detergent and water.

Method 2: Use Ammonia and Cold Water

This method is most effective for old, set-in urine stains. Begin by blotting away any excess urine with a clean cloth or paper towel. Then, mix a solution of one part ammonia and four parts cold water and apply it to the stain. Using a clean cloth, gently rub mixture into the stain before allowing it to sit for at least 10 minutes.

After 10 minutes have passed, rinse off area with cold water and blot the area dry. The stain should be noticeably lighter. If necessary, repeat this process a few times until stain is removed. Be sure to test a small area of the fabric to make sure ammonia does not discolor or damage it.

Additional Tips

  • Always check the care label on the coat before attempting to clean it. Some fabrics may require special treatment or be dry-clean only.
  • When treating the stain, be gentle. Rubbing or scrubbing the stain too hard can cause it to spread or damage the fabric.
  • Be sure to follow up with a thorough washing of the coat to remove any leftover detergent or ammonia.
  • If all else fails, take the coat to a professional. They will have the tools and experience necessary to safely remove stain.
