Before beginning the cleaning process, it is important to inspect urine-stained item. Carefully inspect both sides of the fabric and note any special care instructions that may be included on the label. If the item cannot be machine washed, then proceed to the spot cleaning section.
If the stained item is able to be machine washed, then begin by pre-treating the fabric. Pour a small amount of detergent directly onto the urine stain, and use a cloth or soft brush to rub the detergent into the stain. Allow the detergent to sit on the fabric for five minutes.
Once the pre-treatment process has been completed, wash the fabric in the warmest water that is safe according to the fabric’s care label. This will help remove the bacteria that causes odors. It is strongly suggested to use an enzymatic or oxygenated cleaner for the best results.
Once the wash cycle is finished, it is important to dry the fabric immediately. If the stain is not completely removed after initial washing and drying, then repeat washing and drying process until the stain is gone.
For items that are not able to be machine washed, there are a few simple steps to follow for effective spot cleaning. Begin by blotting the area with a damp cloth or paper towel, being careful not to rub the stain further into fabric.
Once the area has been blotted, mix 1 tablespoon of low-sudsing detergent with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Using a clean cloth or soft brush, apply the detergent solution directly onto stain. Gently rub the detergent into the stain and allow it to soak in for five minutes. After the five minutes has passed, rinse the fabric with cold water.
Once the fabric is rinsed, spray the area with a mixture of 1 quart of warm water and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Allow the mixture to sit on the fabric for 15 minutes, then blot the area with a damp cloth. Lastly, sprinkle the area with some baking soda and allow the fabric to dry completely.
