The longer urine is left to sit on clothing, the harder it is to remove and worse the resulting stain will be. If possible, act quickly to soak up as much of urine as you can before it soaks into fabric.
Mix some liquid detergent into warm water, being sure to dissolve the detergent thoroughly. Submerge the shirt or other clothing item in the water and let it soak for at least 15 minutes.
Gently rub the stained area with your fingers to help the detergent break down urine. Rinse the clothing in warm water, then fill the sink or washing machine with cold water for a final rinse.
If possible, launder the buttondown shirt in the washing machine with a color-safe bleach. White vinegar is also effective for brightening colors and eliminating smells associated with urine.
Hang the clothing outside in the sun to help speed up the drying process and to further fade any remaining stains.
If the stain persists or the smell lingers, repeat steps 2 through 5 to get rid of the stain and odor for good.
