The first step is to use a paper towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible. Do not scrub or rub the stain, as this could push liquid further into the fibers and make it more difficult to remove.
Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water, and use the solution to gently rinse the stain. If you are using a chemical cleaner, be sure to read the directions carefully and test it in an inconspicuous spot before using on entire rug.
Use a clean sponge or cloth to apply a detergent solution to the stain. Again, if you are using a chemical cleaner, be sure to read directions carefully and test it in an inconspicuous spot before using on the entire rug. Blot area with a paper towel to absorb as much of the liquid as possible, then rinse with warm water and blot with a dry towel. Allow the area to air dry completely before vacuuming.
