Removing Sap from Fabric Wedges

If your wedges are cloth or leather based, you’ll need to work carefully to avoid damaging the material. The first step is to scrape off as much sap as possible with a dull knife or spoon. Then, dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and gently blot the affected area. You should be able to see the sap come loose from the fabric. Rinse the area with water and repeat the process until sap is fully removed.

Removing Sap from Synthetic or Plastic Wedges

For synthetic or plastic material, you can use a stronger solvent. Begin by scraping off the sap and then try rubbing stained area with a mild liquid soap and a damp cloth. If that doesn't do the trick, you can use a stronger solution like rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, or WD-40. Whichever solvent you choose, test it out on an inconspicuous area of the wedge first and make sure there is no discoloration. Finally, rinse the area thoroughly with water and let the shoe dry.

Preventing Sap Stains

The best way to deal with tree sap is to avoid it all together. Before heading outdoors, protect your wedges with a waterproof spray designed specifically for shoes. This will also help preserve their color and texture. Additionally, pick up any fallen sap off the ground as soon as you spot it. If your wedges do happen to get stained, don’t put them away without cleaning them; the sap will only get worse over time.
