Tree sap stains on velvet fabric can be unsightly and tricky to get rid of because of the delicate nature of velvet. But don’t worry, it is possible to remove tree sap stains from velvet without damaging your fabric.

What Causes Tree Sap Stains?

Tree sap sometimes finds its way onto fabrics due to contact with furniture, trees, or shrubbery. It's sticky, wet, and has a tendency to seep deep into fabric fibers, making it difficult to remove.

How to Remove Tree Sap Stains from Velvet

Ice cubes

The first step is to freeze the sap with an ice cube. Place the cube directly over the stain, and then slowly move the cube in a circular motion. You should see the sap start to harden and become brittle so that you can scrape it off with a blunt object, such as a credit card or dull knife. Make sure to take care not to press too hard, and use a light hand when scraping.

Absorbent cloth

If freezing the sap doesn't work, then try blotting it off with an absorbent cloth. Start by dipping the cloth in lukewarm water, and then gently dab the stained area. Do not rub, as this can spread stain. Continue to dab with the cloth until the sap lifts from velvet.

Vinegar

If the sap stain persists, then vinegar might be the answer. Mix equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water, and then dip a cloth in the mixture. Apply it directly to the stain, and then leave it to sit for 5 minutes. Blot the area with a clean cloth to remove any remaining residue. If the stain remains, repeat the process until the sap has been fully removed.
