The first step is to scrape off as much as possible without pressing too hard or risking more damage. You can use a blunt object like a butter knife. Don't apply too much force, exert just enough to lift the sap off fabric.
Once you've scraped off the bulk of the stain, use cold water and mild detergent to dampen the area and blot away. Avoid rubbing to prevent further damage. Once you feel that tree sap has been adequately removed, use a dry, clean cloth to gently dab the area.
If the tree sap has already dried and become hardened, add a small amount of liquid dish soap and rub it into the fabric for about 10 minutes. Then rinse garment with cold water and gentle detergent, again avoiding rubbing. With this method, pressing too hard can cause the sap to seep into fabric, so try not to press too hard.
Finally, put your traditional garment through the washing machine on a cold and delicate cycle, followed by a spin in dryer on a low setting. If your dress still has signs of tree sap residue, repeat the process until it is gone.
