Clean the Stain Quickly

As with most stain removal methods, faster you act, the more likely you are to succeed. Tree sap will harden as it ages, so it’s important to start cleaning it off as soon as possible. For best results, you should begin work on the stain before it becomes dry and set.

What You'll Need

  • White vinegar or rubbing alcohol
  • Plastic wrap
  • Washing machine
  • Laundry detergent
  • Fabric softener

Step 1: Remove Excess Sap

If sap has only just been spilt on your taffeta fabric, you may be able to remove the bulk simply by scraping it off with a butter knife or spoon. Be careful not to push down too hard, as this may push the sap further into the fabric.

Step 2: Apply Vinegar or Rubbing Alcohol

Once you’ve scraped off the excess sap, dampen a cloth with white vinegar or rubbing alcohol and dab it onto the remaining sap stain. Leave it on for a few minutes, then use a paper towel to gently rub away the hardened residue.

Step 3: Cover the Area

Once you have removed the sap stain, cover the area with a piece of plastic wrap. This will prevent the stain from oozing back into the fabric during the drying process.

Step 4: Wash in Washing Machine

When you’re ready to wash, set your washing machine to a gentle cycle and use a warm water setting. Add a small amount of laundry detergent, and if necessary, a colour-safe bleach to help remove any remaining stains. Once finished, remove the fabric from washing machine and examine area.

Step 5: Examine and Finish the Cleaning Process

If the stain has been sufficiently lifted, you can proceed to the next step. If not, repeat Steps 2 and 3. When you’re satisfied that the stain has been removed, use a fabric softener to finish the cleaning process. Rinse the area with cold water to remove any remaining residue, and then hang the fabric up to air dry.

Conclusion

Tree sap can be a difficult substance to remove from any fabric, especially taffeta. However, with a few simple methods, you can restore your fabric to its former glory and make sure those pesky tree sap stains are gone for good.
