Removing Tree Sap from Slippers

The key to removing tree sap from slippers is to work quickly, because the longer the stain sets in the harder it will be to remove. After the sap is initially discovered on the slipper, take a dry cloth and try to lightly brush away any excess sap before trying any cleaning methods. If there is still some stubborn sap residue remaining, then you can proceed to the steps below.

Materials Needed

  • Rubbing alcohol or white vinegar
  • Soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Lint-free cloth

Instructions

  1. Soak a lint-free cloth with rubbing alcohol or white vinegar, and use it to generously apply the solution to the stained area. The acidity in the vinegar or alcohol should help to break down the sap and make it easier to remove.
  2. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently scrub sap stain. Put some elbow grease into it; the goal is to get as much of the sap out as possible.
  3. Rinse off the surface of the slipper with cool water. Avoid using hot water, as it can set the stain even further.
  4. If there is still some of sap stain remaining, mix a few drops of liquid laundry detergent with a cup of warm water. Dip a lint-free cloth into the soapy water and use it to dab at the stain until it's gone.
  5. Once the stain is removed, rinse off soap with cool water and let the slipper air dry.

Final Tips

  • Avoid using hot water to rinse off stain, as this can set the stain further.
  • If the sap has already dried, use a tiny bit of vegetable or mineral oil to help soften it before starting the process.
  • Test the rubbing alcohol or vinegar in an inconspicuous area before treating the entire stain, as some slippers may be sensitive to either solvent.
