How to Safely Remove Tree Sap Stains From Silk Tussah Fabrics

Tree sap can be a nightmare when it comes to cleaning fabric. While the resin-like substance can be tough to remove from any material, the delicate nature of silk tussah fabric makes it especially hard. Fortunately, with a few simple steps, you can be sure to have your silk tussah fabrics looking as good as new.

Step 1: Test for Color Fastness

Before attempting to remove the tree sap stains, it is important to first test for color fastness. To do this, simply moisten a cotton swab with a small amount of rubbing alcohol and dab it onto an inconspicuous part of the garment. If the color of the fabric does not change, it is safe to proceed with removing the stain. However, if color fades or bleeds, the cleaning process needs to be done more cautiously or with a professional cleaner.

Step 2: Blot Stain

Next, gently blot the tree sap stained area with a dry white cloth or paper towel. This will help to lift the sap away from the fabric, transferring the stain to the cloth. Be sure to repeat this step until you have blotted out as much sap as possible.

Step 3: Gently Scrape the Stain

Once the majority of the sap has been blotted away, scrape away any remaining residue with a dull knife or spoon. Again, take precaution when scraping to avoid damaging the fabric. Use a light hand and pay close attention to the garment’s fibers.

Step 4: Spot Clean the Stain

Once the majority of the sap has been removed, it’s time to spot clean the stain. First, prepare a solution of cold water and mild detergent. With a clean cloth, lightly dab the solution into the stained area and scrub away any remaining residue. Again, take caution to only use a light hand, as too much pressure can damage the fabric. Once you are satisfied with the results, rinse the area with cold water and pat it dry with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Let Air Dry

Finally, let the area air-dry away from direct sunlight. This helps to ensure that the stain does not set into fabric.
