Tree sap begins to set quickly, so it's important to address the stain as soon as possible. Begin by shaking off any excess sap from the surface of the fabric or scraping it off with a spoon. To prevent the stain from setting further, spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly over it.
Now it's time for the cleaning process. Begin by moistening a clean cloth with lukewarm water and dabbing it onto stain. Then sprinkle some talcum powder or cornstarch onto affected area and allow it to sit overnight. This should absorb any residue left behind by the petroleum jelly. The following day, brush away any powder left behind with a soft-bristle brush and vacuum it up.
The next step is to mix a solution of gentle detergent, such as a mild dish soap, and lukewarm water. Gently blot the spot with the detergent mixture, avoiding rubbing it into the fabric. Rinse the area with lukewarm water and blot it dry with a clean cloth.
If stain persists, try applying a few drops of hydrogen peroxide directly to the stain. Blot the area with a clean cloth and rinse the fabric. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process until the stain is gone.
Finally, take garment to the dry cleaner. For stubborn stains, a professional dry cleaner may be able to use special solvents to dissolve the sap.
