When sap lands on your raincoat’s fabric, the best strategy is to act fast. Sap will dry quickly, and once it does, it becomes much more difficult to remove. Begin by scraping off any excess sap with a blunt knife or spoon. Once you’ve eliminated as much of the sap as possible, turn the raincoat inside out and machine wash it using the shortest cycle possible. If your raincoat is too delicate for washing machine, hand-wash it in cold water with a mild laundry detergent.
After washing your raincoat, you should check to see if the sap stain has been removed. If it hasn’t, you may need to treat area with a solvent like rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, or WD-40. Apply the solvent directly to the sap and scrub gently with a soft cloth or brush. Be sure to avoid scrubbing too hard, as this could cause damage to the fabric. Once you’ve treated the area, rinse the raincoat under cold water and machine or hand-wash again.
Finally, if the sap stain still lingers, your best bet is to take the raincoat to a professional dry cleaner. Professional dry cleaners are able to use specialty solvents to remove even the most stubborn stains, so they’ll likely be able to restore your raincoat to its former glory.
