When tree sap gets onto poplin, the first step is to freeze sap using ice cubes or an ice pack. Leave the cooling agent in place until the sap becomes brittle and hard. Then use a butter knife or credit card to carefully scrape away as much of the hardened sap as you can. Don’t apply any pressure as it could damage the fabric.
Next, dampen a cloth or paper towel with white vinegar and rub the affected area. This will help to dissolve the remaining sap residue. Then rinse the area with cold water and repeat if necessary. To finish, you can use a stain remover designed for removing oil and grease from fabrics, such as dish soap, laundry detergent, or a commercial product.
If the sap has been on poplin fabric for a while and has created a noticeable discoloration, you may need to use a more abrasive method to remove the stain. In this case, try making a paste using baking soda and water. Rub this mixture into the stained area and let sit for 10-20 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
For deeper stains and discoloration, you may need to try a stronger solution of one part bleach to one part water. Be sure to test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area first, as some fabrics are not compatible with bleach. If it doesn’t discolor the test patch, you can apply the mixture to the sap-stained area and rinse with water.
No matter what method you use, always be sure to check the fabric care instructions for proper cleaning instructions. If you’re not sure, it’s best to take the item to a professional cleaner.
