When trees produce sap, it runs down their trunks and branches, creating a potential problem for anyone who happens to come too close. The sap can get on your clothing, and even when it dries, it can leave behind a nasty stain. The good news is that tree sap stains can be removed from a polo shirt if you know the right technique.
Removing Tree Sap Stains from a Polo Shirt
- Start by brushing away any dried sap with an old toothbrush, being careful not to spread the stain. If the stain has been there awhile, use a dull knife or spoon to scrape off as much of sap as possible.
- Once most of the sap has been removed, rinse the stained area in cold water, rubbing gently. This will help loosen up the rest of the sap.
- Make a mixture of equal parts white vinegar, dish soap, and baking soda. Use a toothbrush (or hand) to spread mixture onto the stained area of the polo.
- Scrub gently but firmly with the toothbrush to work the mixture into the fabric, and let it sit for several minutes.
- Rinse polo shirt under cold water to remove both the mixture and the sap stain.
- Repeat the entire procedure if necessary, using a clean toothbrush each time.
- Once sap stain is completely gone, launder the polo shirt like normal. Allow to air dry.
If the stain has been set in fabric after laundering, it may not respond to above technique. In that case, you can take advantage of other stain-removal techniques, such as using laundry detergent, spot removers, or a commercial product designed to remove tree sap.
Preventing Tree Sap Stains from Occurring Again
The best way to avoid dealing with tree sap stains is to prevent them in the first place. Here are a few tips for avoiding tree sap stains:
- Avoid walking or standing too close to tree trunks or branches.
- Be aware of your surroundings, especially when visiting parks or hiking trails.
- Wear appropriate clothing when working in areas near trees—long sleeves, hats, and gloves can keep sap off exposed skin.
- Have a product handy that is specifically designed to remove tree sap, such as a solvent or spot remover.
By taking a few simple precautions, you can help guard against getting tree sap on your clothing and having to deal with the stain.
