Tree sap is a waxy substance that can accumulate on clothing, usually when someone brushes up against a sap-producing tree. Tree sap can be a major nightmare to remove, especially if it’s been on the fabric for several days. But don’t despair - there are several ways to tackle these sticky stains.

Vinegar Solution

White vinegar is an effective way to remove tree sap from clothing. Start by scraping off any excess sap from the fabric. Then dampen a cloth with warm water and mix it with a few tablespoons of white vinegar. Blot the stained area until no more sap appears on the cloth. If stain does not come off completely, repeat the process.

Freezing Method

Another method to try is the freezing method. Place the jersey in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for several hours. When it’s been sufficiently chilled, take it out and use a spoon or butter knife to scrape off remaining tree sap. Make sure to use gentle pressure and make sure you do this over a trash can or other surface that can be quickly wiped down.

Laundry Detergent

If the above methods do not work, you can try using laundry detergent. Start by running the garment under cold water. Then make a paste of laundry detergent and warm water, apply it to the stained area and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing in cold water. Again, scrape off any remaining sap with a spoon or butter knife. Once you’ve finished, throw the jersey in the washing machine on the delicate cycle with detergent and fabric softener.

Preventing Future Stains

To help prevent future tree sap stains, try carrying a stick of Chapstick when you walk under trees. The waxy texture of the Chapstick can help create a protective barrier between you and the tree. Also, make sure to always wear clothing that is easy to clean, like 100% cotton, wool or synthetics. These fabrics will make it much easier to remove tree sap stains in the future.
