Tree sap can be an eyesore, especially on light-colored gingham fabric with its checkered pattern. When sap is left untreated on gingham, it can damage the fabric, so we recommend cleaning it immediately.

Start by freezing the sap. Place a bag of frozen vegetables or ice over the stain for about 15 minutes. This will harden and make it easier to scrape off. Once the sap has hardened, use a dull knife or plastic spatula to scrape away the sap. Don’t use a razor blade or anything sharp as this may damage the fabric. Then, place a damp cloth over the sap stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. This will help loosen up the sap.

Once the sap has been mostly removed, mix a solution of mild liquid dish soap and warm water. Dip a white cloth into the solution and gently dab at remaining sap stain. Once you’ve removed as much as you can, give the gingham a thorough rinsing with clean, cool water and allow it to air dry.

You may still find a few stubborn sap stains remaining, but don’t worry — there’s still hope! Try using a commercial stain remover specifically made for removing tree sap. Again, use a white cloth dipped in the solution and gently rub at the stain. When all visible residue has been removed, rinse the area with cool water and air dry.

Getting tree sap off light-colored gingham fabric can be tricky, but with these simple steps you can have your gingham fabric looking its best in no time.
