One of the most common questions we hear is “How can I clean tree sap stains off my down jacket?” Tree sap can leave sticky, hard-to-remove stains, and it’s important to act fast before stain sets into the fabric. Here’s a step-by-step guide to removing tree sap from your down jacket.

Step 1: Dab the Stain With a Damp Paper Towel

The first step is to wet a paper towel and use it to dab the affected area. Make sure the paper towel is damp, rather than soaking wet, as you don’t want to risk saturating the fabric with water. Don’t rub or scrub stain, as this can spread it and make it harder to remove.

Step 2: Apply a Detergent Solution

Mix a mild laundry detergent with warm water in a bowl, stirring until frothy. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently blot the stained area. Allow solution to sit on fabric for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 3: Dry & Treat Remaining Stains

Once you’ve finished washing the stained area, allow it to air dry. If any traces of the stain remain, treat the area with a prewash spot remover and launder according to the instructions on the label. Be sure to check for colorfastness on an inconspicuous area of the fabric before applying the product.

Step 4: Take Care of Your Down Jacket

Finally, once stain has been removed, be sure to care for your down jacket properly. Feather down is an incredibly delicate material and requires special handling to prevent damage. Read the care label carefully and follow all washing and drying instructions. If possible, wash your down items separately to avoid abrasion from other fabrics.
