If you’ve ever had to clean a tree sap stain from cotton piqué, you know how challenging they can be. The hard, dry sap bonds to the delicate fabric, making it difficult to remove without damaging the fabric or discoloring the clothing. Lucky for you, there are some simple techniques you can use to help get rid of those stubborn tree sap stains.
Before you start treating the stain, it’s important to get rid of any excess sap on the fabric. Doing this will help cleaning solution you use penetrate the fabric more effectively and reduce chances of further staining. To scrape off the sap, use a dull butter knife or a spoon. Make sure to use a light hand so you don’t damage fabric.
Once you’ve scraped off any excess sap, you’ll want to soak the fabric in a cleaning solution. There are a few cleaning solutions you can use for this, but the most effective one is a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts water. Soak the fabric for 15-30 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Once the fabric has been soaked and rinsed, you’ll need to pretreat stain. You can do this using liquid laundry detergent or a commercial pre-treatment product. Apply the detergent or pre-treatment directly to the stain, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before laundering as normal.
Once the stain has been pretreated, it’s time to launder the fabric as normal. If possible, wash fabric on a gentle cycle with cold water. Additionally, you may want to add an extra rinse cycle to help remove any lingering residue.
With these steps, you can help get those stubborn tree sap stains out of your clothing. Just remember to take your time and be gentle with the fabric. With some patience, you can have your clothing looking good as new in no time!
