No one likes finding a spot of sap on their clothing and furniture, but tree sap stains can be surprisingly tricky to remove. On most fabrics, you can't just wash them off with detergent--the sap will harden and become nearly impossible to get rid of. Fortunately, there are a few techniques you can use to successfully clean off tree sap without damaging your coat.

Remove Sap from Fabric Coats

To remove tree sap from a fabric coat, start by scraping off as much of the sap as possible with dull knife or spoon. Be careful not to rub it too hard, as you may damage fabric. Next, mix together a solution of dish soap and warm water. Dip a cloth into the soapy solution, then gently dab at the stained area until the sap is removed. If this doesn’t do trick, try applying a bit of rubbing alcohol to the stain. After that, it should come right off.

Remove Sap From Leather Coats

If the coat you want to clean is made of leather, the steps you must take to remove the sap are slightly different. Start by using the same method as above—scraping off as much of the sap as possible with a dull knife or spoon. Then, make a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water, and apply it to the sap stain with a damp cloth. Use a soft bristled brush to scrub stain until it is completely gone. Finally, rinse off the vinegar solution with a clean, damp cloth and allow the coat to dry.
