Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stain

Before attempting to wash stained clothing, pre-treat the tree sap. Begin by putting clothing on a flat surface and gently scraping away as much of the sap as possible without damaging the fabric. Next, mix equal parts white vinegar and water. Use a clean cloth or sponge to apply the vinegar solution to stain, and let it sit for several minutes. Finally, rinse the garment with cold water.

Step 2: Launder the Garment

After pre-treating the stain, it’s time to launder the garment. If the item is machine-washable, use a mild detergent like Dreft or Woolite on a delicate cycle, and cold water. For hand-washable items, create a mixture of one teaspoon of mild detergent mixed in two cups of cold water. Gently agitate the fabric in the sudsy water and then rinse with cold water. Do not wring or twist the clothing while washing.

Step 3: Test the Result

Once you have completed the laundering process, inspect the garment for remaining stains. If there are still traces of sap, repeat steps 1 and 2. Otherwise, hang the garment to air dry.

Step 4: Apply Stain Remover (Optional)

If the stain persists after laundering, try applying a specialty stain remover, such as Shout or Spray'n Wash. Follow the instructions on the product label, being careful to test the product on a small, inconspicuous area of the fabric first. After treating the stain, launder garment according to the steps outlined in Step 2.
