Tree sap is one of those things you don't consider until it's splattered across your favorite buttondown shirt. The gooey substance can seem daunting to remove, but fear not: there's hope. The key is to act quickly and take appropriate steps to ensure your clothing isn't permanently stained. The first thing you'll need to do is scrape off any excess sap with a dull knife. Be careful not to cut or tear the fabric while doing so. Keeping the stain wet is important; try soaking the affected area in some warm water as soon as you can. If it's already dried and hardened, you may need to attempt to soften it first. An application of rubbing alcohol can do the trick. You can then proceed to pre-treat stain with a powdered laundry detergent and a tablespoon of white vinegar. Massage the mixture into the area before washing. To make sure the sap has been sufficiently removed, you may want to attempt spot cleaning with a harsh brush prior to tossing the garment in the washing machine. Between each step of this process, be sure to rinse off any residual soap or detergent. While sap stains can be bothersome, they don't have to be permanent. With a gentle hand and right cleaning techniques, you can keep your favorite buttondown shirt looking good as new.
