Gather Supplies

  • Cold water
  • White vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Clean cloths
  • Dry-cleaning solvent

Remove Excess Sap

Before doing anything else, you need to remove as much of the sap as possible. The best way to do this is with a soft-bristled brush and some cold water. Use the brush to scrub away any excess sap and then set area rug aside to dry.

Create Cleaning Solution

The next step is to create a gentle cleaning solution. Mix together 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and 1 quart of cold water. You don't want to use hot or warm water in this mixture as it can cause sap to set faster.

Spot Clean

Using a clean cloth, begin to spot clean area rug with cleaning solution. Dip the cloth into solution, then wring out excess liquid. Gently scrub at the sap stains until the sap begins to fade away. If stain still persists, try using a dry-cleaning solvent.

Rinse & Dry

Once you've removed the sap stains, rinse away the cleaning solution with cold water and let the area rug air dry. Do not place the area rug in the dryer as this could set the sap stains and make them harder to remove.
