Tree sap has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which makes it great for preventing disease in trees, but not so good when it gets on clothing. Whether you’re a professional chef or a home cook, your apron is likely to come into contact with tree sap at some point. Fortunately, there are a few cleaning techniques you can use to remove stains.
If you notice a fresh tree sap stain, it’s important to act quickly. The longer the sap sits on fabric, the harder it is to remove, so sooner you start the cleaning process, the better.
Start by gently scraping away any visible sap with a butter knife or credit card. Once you have removed as much as you can, put stained part of the apron in the freezer for an hour or two. This will make the sap hard and brittle, which means it’s easier to remove.
After sap has hardened, scrape off any remaining pieces with the knife or card. Then, rub some liquid detergent into the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. Finally, rinse the apron in cold water and repeat process if necessary.
If you have an old tree sap stain, don’t worry – it can still be removed! Start by rubbing a combination of baking soda and lemon juice into the stain and letting it sit for 10 minutes. The baking soda helps draw out the sap, while the lemon juice acts as a natural bleach.
Once the mixture has had time to work its magic, use a damp cloth to gently scrub the stain. After that, rinse the area with cold water and repeat the process if necessary.
