To begin, gather the following supplies:
Before proceeding, it’s important to test the fabric for colorfastness. To do this, dab a few drops of rubbing alcohol on a hidden part of garment and blot it dry with a clean cloth. If the color does not change, proceed to Step 3. If the color does change, proceed to Step 4.
If the fabric is colorfast, the next step is to treat the stain with white vinegar. Begin by pouring a quarter cup of white vinegar over the affected area. Let sit for 10–15 minutes. Afterwards, blot the area with a clean white cloth. If the stain remains, move onto Step 4.
For colored fabrics, spot treat the stain with an oxygen-based solvent or citrus-based pre-treatment spray. First, check the garment's care label. If the fabric is safe to wet, apply the solvent or spray directly onto affected area. Let sit for 10–15 minutes, then blot with a clean cloth. If the stain still remains, move onto Step 5.
Finally, launder the garment in a washing machine using the hottest water setting safe for the fabric. For extra cleaning power, add a scoop of laundry detergent to the wash. After the cycle has finished, inspect the garment for any remaining residue. If the stain still remains, repeat Steps 3–4 before laundering again.
