Before trying anything else, turn the underwear inside out, then use a clean cloth or paper towel to blot (not rub!) the stain. This will help lift stain away and absorb excess toothpaste.
Once you’ve blotted the stain, make a solution of one teaspoon of liquid detergent mixed in a cup of warm water. Apply the mixture directly onto the stain and gently work it into the fabric using a toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush. Allow the detergent solution to sit on the stain for 10 minutes before moving on to the next step.
Rinse the stained area with cold water to remove the detergent. If stain remains, repeat steps 2 and 3 until it’s gone.
Once the stain is gone, machine wash underwear as usual following the directions on the care label. Don’t forget to check for any remaining traces of the stain before putting the underwear into the dryer.
If possible, let the underwear air dry, as exposure to heat from a dryer can set the stain. If you must use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting and keep a close eye on them throughout cycle.
With these five simple steps, you can combat toothpaste stains on your underwear without much fuss. Just remember to blot stain, pretreat with detergent, rinse it off and then wash as normal. Air drying is best if possible, but if you must use a dryer, keep an eye on the items to make sure the stain doesn’t reappear.
