Start by treating the affected area with a pre-wash stain remover that has been specifically designed for treating tomato stains. Let the garment sit for 10 minutes so that pre-treatment can do its job. If the stain persists, rub liquid laundry detergent onto the spot and gently massage it into fabric. Rinse garment thoroughly with cold water, then squeeze out excess moisture.
If stain still remains, mix equal parts of distilled white vinegar and water, and apply the mixture onto stained area. Rub the fabric together to help the vinegar penetrate the fabric and loosen the stain molecules. Let this mixture sit on the fabric for 30 minutes, then rinse out any residue with cold water.
Next, rub a small amount of liquid enzyme detergent directly onto tomato stain, and let it sit for no more than 5 minutes. Afterward, scrape off any remaining bits of tomato with a spoon or blunt knife. Rinse the fabric thoroughly with cold water and let it air dry. Once the garment is completely dry, check to make sure that the stain has been completely removed.
Finally, if the stain still remains, take the garment to a professional cleaner and ask for special treatment for tomato stains. Make sure that you explain the fabric content of the garment and how long the stain has been sitting on it. Professional cleaners usually have products and methods that can remove even the toughest of stains.
