Tomato stains can be difficult to remove, especially once they've been dried. To treat a tomato stain on a t-shirt, first scrape off any solids using a spoon or a butter knife. Next, pre-treat the stained area with a liquid laundry detergent. Wait approximately five minutes to give detergent time to break down the stain. Then, rinse stained area with cold water while gently scrubbing with a soft toothbrush.
Once the stain is removed, put the t-shirt in the washing machine on the hottest temperature recommended for fabric, and add a regular dose of detergent. Allow t-shirt to air dry afterwards and avoid putting it in dryer, as this will set the stain.
If stain has been sitting for some time, it may take a few attempts to fully remove it. Treating the stain with massage therapy or white vinegar can also help to lift the stain further. For stubborn stains, consider taking the t-shirt to a professional dry cleaner.
To prevent future tomato stains on your t-shirt, start by dabbing away any excess liquid with a paper towel right away. Then, pretreat the area with a stain remover like OxiClean. Finally, always check the garment label before laundering to ensure that the temperature and type of detergent used will not damage the t-shirt.
