Remove fresh tomato stains on trench coats as soon as possible for the best results. To start, lay the coat flat on a clean surface and use a paper towel or clean cloth to blot area to absorb as much of stain as possible. Do not rub the stain.

If the stain persists, make a paste of a teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of water. Gently rub the paste onto stained area, then apply some more baking soda directly on top. Let it sit for 30 minutes before washing in cold water.

For dried on tomato stains, make a paste of equal parts white vinegar and borax. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for a few hours. Once the paste has dried, brush away the powder. Then, wash the coat in cold water.

If the stain still won't come out, you can use a pre-treating product like OxiClean or an enzyme-based stain remover. Soak the coat overnight in the cleaning solution, then wash in cold water. Repeat the process as necessary for stubborn stains.

For extra protection against future stains, consider coating your trench coat with a spray-on protector. This will help repel dirt and liquid so stains don’t set in as quickly.
