One of the cardinal rules of stain removal is to blot the stain as quickly as possible. To do this, get a clean white cloth or paper towel and press down on stain gently. Don't rub it and make sure not to press too hard — rubbing the fabric can make the stain set in permanently.
Soap and water are usually the first thing to try when removing a stain. Dip a cloth into a bowl of warm, soapy water and blot stain until it starts to come out. If the stain is stubborn, you can use a bit of dish soap, which is designed to cut through grease.
If the stain isn't coming out, you can try using white vinegar and baking soda. Mix together one part vinegar with two parts baking soda and apply the mixture to the stain. Let it sit for an hour or two before rinsing with warm water. This can help to loosen the stain and make it easier to remove.
If the stain still won't come out, it's time to break out the heavy artillery — a commercial stain remover. Read the directions on packaging before applying it to your garment. After the stain remover has had a chance to work its magic, you can throw your garment in the washing machine and launder as normal.
If stain still won't come out, you may need to repeat the steps above. Be sure to let the fabric dry completely between applications of the stain remover.
With a little patience, it's possible to get tomato stains out of sweatshirts. Just remember to act fast and to use the right supplies and techniques. And don't forget to launder your garment as soon as possible after treating it.
