What You Will Need:
- Dish soap
- A bucket of warm water
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Stain remover (optional)
Steps to Get Rid of Tomato Stains:
- Remove excess tomato. Blot up any remaining juice with a clean paper towel and rinse the stain under cold running water.
- Soak the sundress. Make a solution of one teaspoon of dish soap to one quart (four cups) of warm water. Submerge fabric and let it soak for at least 15 minutes.
- Mix a paste. In a small bowl, mix equal parts white vinegar and baking soda. This will create a paste that you can use to scrub the stain out.
- Scrub the stain. Apply the paste to the tomato stain and gently rub it with a soft brush or cloth. Be sure to use a circular motion when rubbing to help loosen the stain.
- Rinse and check. Rinse the area with cold water and see if the stain has dissipated. If not, repeat steps 2-4 until it is gone.
- Use hydrogen peroxide. If the stain still won't budge, try mixing one part hydrogen peroxide with one part dish soap and applying it to the stubborn stain. Rub it in gently and let it sit for up to an hour before rinsing.
- Apply a stain remover. If all else fails, try using a commercial stain remover such as Spray 'n Wash. Follow the instructions on label and rinse after treatment.
Tips For Cleaning Tomato Stains:
- Be careful not to rub too hard when scrubbing the stain - this may cause damage to the fabric.
- Always test a cleaning solution on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it won't damage the fabric.
- If the stain is still visible after cleaning, try sprinkling it with baking soda or talcum powder before laundering.
- Do not put the sundress in the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone - heat can set the stain in the fabric.
